Atlanta Dialogue: Next Steps

The group discussing immigration issues came up with the following next steps:

1. Continue to strategize about how the way we talk about immigration issues can avoid typical objections

2. Write letters to the editor with human rights perspectives

3. Hold a night of prayer meetings in houses of worship across the city
-This could be launched by an interfaith press conference that announces the date
-A good day might be June 21st, the day after World Refugee Day; this day is also the first day of summer, so framing it as a "solstice" event might attract some who aren't into religion
-The night of prayer could launch a series of follow-up meetings (e.g., every 3rd Thursday of the month) and informational updates

The group discussing refugee issues identified the following as possible ways to move forward:

1. Launch a community education program
-address basic questions such as, what's a refugee?
-increase community collaboration on refugee issues

2. Increase VOLAG participation and collaboration on World Refugee Day
-This is a long-term goal, but one way to collaborate immediately is to join in Catholic Charities' World Refugee Day celebration this year

Living in the US 101: Educational Resources for Immigrants

[notes by Katie Hengeveld]

Basic idea: While refugees are provided with a good amount of cultural orientation, other immigrants generally don't have that opportunity. Some key orientation issues could be introduced into already-standing settings, such as ESL classrooms. Ideas mentioned:
-tornado drills
-hurricane procedures
-Emergency Room versus Health Center
-the right to ask for an interpreter in medical settings
-the availability of immunizations and WIC, regardless of legal status
-"stop, drop, and roll"
-knowing which resources in your community are free
-211
-Understanding Antibiotics: the importance of completing a course
-Heat waves (hydration, leaving children in cars, etc.)
-When the electricity goes out in the winter (services like ACSET Lat. Amer. Services provide emergency assistance)
-Missions / free meals
-Miranda rights
-Indecent exposure laws
-Domestic Abuse / Protective Services
-Understanding Daycare: What will your provider do if you don't pick the kids up? If you need to send someone else to pick your kids up, how do you need to do this? Does your provider charge you for picking kids up late?

Addressing the Cultural Differences of Immigrants and The Community

[Notes by Rev. Al Hoogewind, entered and edited by Jamie Pitts.]

We need a better organization of services for immigrants.

The missing link is a purposefully run agency to coordinate efforts:

"here's how to do immigration"

"these are the resources"

"these are the services available"

train churches and immigrants about culture

need an agency to grease the employment world

teaching churches how to address the cultural issues

teaching immigrants to understand American cultural expectations

need a warehouse connected to this coordinating agency for household supplies

need to have contacts with businesses and schools

We need to address the cultural issues of the second generation immigrants

discipline issues

disrespect of parents, traditions, the "old" country

marital issues

We need to assist specific immigrant groups--which also need to support each other and work closely with the coordinating agency

Americans need to learn to use tough love approaches within the context of understanding cultural differences between immigrants and "refugees"

We need to address how we can help immigrants to become [?] and repairers of their homes

The services needed by immigrants are in place--what's needed is a coordinating agency
